Before you form a relationship with someone, you will want to know them, right?

That’s where ‘dating’ comes in.
We date to find a partner.
Generally, we will date someone to make ourselves desirable and have them want to be in a relationship with us…
…but that’s not entirely what dating is.
We don’t ONLY date to make the other person want to be in a relationship with us…
…we date to primarily evaluate the other person’s suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship.
We date to screen the person we want to be in a relationship with…
…to study them and find out who they are and what they are about, to see if they possess the qualities of someone we would want to be in a romantic relationship with, to find out if they will make a great partner in the long-term and wouldn’t be a nuisance or wouldn’t hurt us emotionally, to see if we are compatible and decide whether to take our companionship into the romantic arena and pursue a long-term romantic relationship.

We date to get to know someone really well to decide whether or not we want to pursue a relationship with them.
What to do (and NOT to do) when dating someone
So even though you would want to date to have your prospect want to be in a relationship with you, your primary objective is to study them to find out who they are and what they are about.
Study them to find out if they possess the qualities of a person you will want to be in a romantic relationship with, and whether or not they will make a great lover and partner and wouldn’t be a nuisance or wouldn’t hurt you emotionally.
And you’re going to have to hold off intimacy until you can be certain they’re worth pursuing a romantic relationship with.
